Fees and planning
Mediation costs and practical arrangements
Our preferred approach is a single agreed fee for the whole mediation process, with no hidden extras. We agree what the process will include and the total mediation fee before work begins.
The fee reflects the scope of the work, the people involved and the process required. We make clear in advance how VAT and any separately payable costs, such as the venue, will be treated. If the agreed scope needs to change, any fee adjustment will be discussed and agreed before additional work is undertaken.
You do not need to work out the whole process before contacting us. A free 30-minute initial discussion can help clarify the situation and what a proposal would need to cover.
An indicative two-party Workplace Mediation fee
£5,000–£7,500 plus VAT
Depending on the complexity of the issue, this is the indicative total fee for the following one-off Workplace Mediation process involving two parties whose employment relationship is continuing. It is a process fee, rather than a daily rate.
- Initial briefing discussions with the organisation.
- Separate pre-mediation meetings with each participant, normally by Zoom or Teams and lasting up to about one hour each.
- A joint mediation meeting in person, at a venue provided and paid for by the organisation.
- The mediators’ travel costs, assuming the venue is within the UK.
- A follow-up meeting with the organisation to report any agreed outcomes or advised next steps, within the agreed confidentiality arrangements.
This is an indicative range, not a quotation for every dispute. We will confirm the scope and fee for your particular case before proceeding.
Who pays the mediation fee?
Workplace Mediation
Where the employment relationship is continuing, the mediation fee is normally paid by the commissioning organisation.
Employment Mediation after the employment relationship has ended
Where the employment relationship has ceased, the mediation fee may be split between the parties. In some cases, the employing organisation agrees to pay the whole fee. The payment arrangements should be agreed in advance.
Commercial Mediation
Commercial Mediation fees are usually split evenly between the parties. The fee and how it will be shared should be agreed in advance.
Two mediators for one mediation fee
Our normal Co-Mediation proposition is two mediators for one mediation fee. The mediation fee is not increased simply because two mediators are involved in our normal service.
There may be cases requiring a different fee arrangement because of their scale, duration, travel or other unusual requirements. Any fee would be agreed in advance.
Teams and multi-party disputes
A team dispute may require several individual and group meetings, particularly where concerns overlap or several grievances are involved. The number of participants alone does not tell us how much work is needed.
We can quote a fixed price once the scope of the mediation and the number of meetings likely to be required have been established. Tell us about the people involved, the main issues, what has already been tried and any formal procedures underway.
Commercial Mediation fees
Commercial Mediation is priced individually. The fee may vary according to the complexity of the dispute, the number of parties and the value of the dispute.
Commercial Mediation can involve parties, legal advisers and decision-makers with different preparation and meeting needs. Contact us to discuss the dispute and obtain a proposal covering the appropriate mediator or mediation team, preparation and meetings.
Venue, online meetings and travel
For the two-party process described above, the organisation provides and pays for the joint meeting venue. Venue costs are separate from the mediation fee.
We can work in person, online or through hybrid arrangements, including where participants are at separate UK sites or in different countries. We will discuss which arrangement is suitable and what it means for preparation and fees. An online process should not be assumed to have a particular price reduction.
The indicative example includes UK mediator travel. International travel and any other unusual requirements need to be discussed and agreed separately.
What should we establish before booking?
Read how we prepare and structure the mediation process →
- Who needs to participate, and whether advisers or other people will attend.
- The proposed preparation, meetings and follow-up.
- Whether the work will be in person, online or hybrid, and who will arrange the venue or online access.
- The fee, VAT treatment, travel arrangements and any other costs.
- Confidentiality and what may be reported to the commissioning organisation.
- Payment, cancellation and rescheduling terms, and how any change in scope will be agreed.
These points should be clear in the arrangements for your case. We will confirm the applicable terms as part of the arrangements for your case.
Considering the cost of leaving conflict unresolved
The mediation fee is one part of the decision. Manager and HR time, disruption, absence and lost productivity can also be relevant in workplace conflict. Some of those costs may already have been incurred; others may be avoidable through appropriate earlier intervention.
Our calculator helps you explore estimates using your own assumptions. It does not predict an outcome or guarantee that mediation will save a particular amount.
