Professional background and qualifications

Antony was called to the Bar in 1984 and practises as a barrister and mediator from Littleton Chambers. Alongside his employment law practice, he has extensive experience of commercial dispute resolution across the public and private sectors. His legal work includes contractual and company disputes, boardroom disagreements, disputes between founders and investors, insolvency and administration, and partnerships, including limited liability partnerships. He also has experience in Sports Law and Professional Negligence.

He first became accredited as a Civil and Commercial Mediator in 2008, subsequently adding Workplace Mediation and Community Mediation. His Mediation CV records his registration with the Civil Mediation Council and accreditation with the College of Mediators. He is also a member of The Barrister Group’s mediation panel.

Antony has considerable experience as a mediation advocate, representing a party in mediation as well as acting as the mediator.

Civil and Commercial Mediation experience

Antony has mediated disputes ranging from claims worth a few thousand pounds to complex, high-value disputes involving several parties. His experience includes:

  • Commercial contract claims across different industries, including investment banking disputes.
  • Complex disputes involving an internet platform and its users.
  • Restrictive covenant and confidential information disputes arising from the departure of directors or senior staff and team moves, involving both individuals and competing businesses.
  • Partnership disputes between partners and their firms, between individual partners, and within family farming businesses.
  • Sports and sports sponsorship disputes involving organisations, businesses and individuals.
  • Business tenancy disputes between landlords and individual businesses or groups of businesses.

Multi-party and team mediations

Antony has experience of multi-party and team mediations, working with disputes involving several participants and conflict affecting relationships across a team. His approach allows space for individual concerns as well as the issues the participants need to address together.

Conflict coaching

Antony is also a qualified coach and offers conflict coaching: individual support to help someone think through a difficult situation, explore their options and prepare for constructive conversations. Conflict coaching can help a person prepare for mediation or consider how to approach conflict outside a mediation process.

Workplace Mediation and Employment Mediation

Antony’s experience includes disputes concerning bullying, discrimination, victimisation, dismissal, whistleblowing, terms and conditions, and redundancies. His background allows him to work with both the legal issues and the relationships affected by a dispute.

He has also mediated education disputes between universities and academic staff or students, between schools and staff, and between teachers and parents.

Community Mediation and other disputes

Antony’s experience includes boundary disputes, nuisance and trespass claims, serious conflict between neighbours, and disputes between generations of a family, including disputed wills.

After qualifying as a Community Mediator, he made a substantial commitment to voluntary mediation work. His CV records at least 20 days a year devoted to Community Mediation without charge. This work has broadened his experience of different mediation models and of helping people whose relationships have become deeply strained.

An active approach to resolution

Antony brings energy, good humour and sensitivity to mediation. He describes his approach as “omni-partial”: working actively and equally hard with every party to help them find a resolution, while leaving decisions about any agreement with the participants.

His focus is on resolution of the particular dispute. He encourages participants to look beyond bargaining positions and explore what an agreement needs to achieve. Where appropriate, he will examine and challenge entrenched positions or apparent “bottom lines”, helping people think creatively and work collaboratively.

Co-mediation and a process suited to the dispute

Experience across Civil and Commercial Mediation, Workplace Mediation and Community Mediation informs Antony’s flexible approach. He draws on the different methods used in each setting and works both as a sole mediator and in co-mediation teams.

The process should fit the particular conflict and the individuals involved in it. Antony’s work within Mediation Rescue reflects that principle, with the format and mediation team chosen around the needs of the dispute.
